About this event

Funding and Contributions: This event is funded by a Stream Cleanup Grant to the Bluff City Canoe Club by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) as part of the Habitat Protection Program.

The Bluff City Canoe club is partnering with the Wolf River Conservancy and Blues City Kayaks for the event.

Additional assistance is being provided by the City of Piperton Public Works Department, the Bartlett branch of the TWRA, and KCW Solutions of Collierville.

Event Description: The cleanup targets a 6.4 mile section of the Wolf river between the Fayette County cities of Rossville and Piperton, Tennessee.

Participants will be paddling a wide natural class one river with meandering curves and bends. This section has never been channelized but is easily followed without the familiar WRC blue and white canoe trail signs. Downed trees and strainers are present but can be easily avoided by individuals with minimum skills.

Along this section, trash clusters around river obstructions. Above average skill is needed to maneuver your boat to remove trash near obstructions. An accidental capsize is a very real possibility.

Refreshments will be available at both the launch and take-out. Trash grabbers, trash bags, and gloves will also be available.

Meet for the Launch: You will meet your fellow paddlers at the Rossville Access. . Please arrive around 8:00 AM to unload your gear and participate in the front-end vehicle shuttles. The last shuttle will leave at 8:30. We will also run a shuttle at the end of the trip as needed.

Prepare for Adventure: Dress in quick-dry (no cotton) clothing. Exercise attire would be a good choice. Protect all parts of your body with either clothing or sunscreen. Don’t forget an appropriate head covering. Wear shoes that attach securely to your feet.

Additional items to bring include water, snacks, insect spray, and a lunch.

Parking Disclaimer: Both the launch and take-out parking areas are unmonitored but relatively safe. Remember to secure or hide any valuables that you leave in your vehicle.

Please note that the Bluff City Canoe Club, Wolf River Conservancy and other participating organizations are not responsible for loss of or damage to private property.

Safety and PFD requirement: Participants must wear and properly fasten a US Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD) while on the river. Children must wear child size approved PFD’s. There are no exceptions to the PFD requirements.

Please do not use the “belt type” units that are popular with the SUP community. These are single discharge units and cannot easily be reloaded once deployed.

Although the Wolf River is rated as a class one river (little whitewater), conditions can rapidly change. It is imperative that boaters realistically evaluate their experience and abilities related to the section being paddled before launching into the water.

The event will be facilitated by trained and experienced paddlers from the Wolf River Conservancy, the Bluff City Canoe Club, and Blues City Kayaks. Their purpose is to provide you with a safe and personally fulfilling adventure. Their decisions and recommendations will favor the most cautious and safest resolution of any concerns.
