What a pleasant evening.  Clark Eid and I were joined by my wife, Barbara, Pauline and Mike Vernon and Pete Payne.

As stated at the last monthly meeting, Clark paddles there MOST Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6:00 pm.
Clark stores a kayak at the Memphis Yacht Club marina so he launches where his boat is stored. If you would like to paddle with him some evening, get in touch with him and he will paddle around to meet you at the ramp.

We had no difficulty accessing the ramp at the yacht club.  The gate into the park at the south end of Mud Island was open when we came in.  Keep bearing to the left as you enter the park and you will come to the yacht club.  We unloaded our boats at the water's edge of the concrete ramp and then parked our cars farther up the ramp.  There was plenty of parking.

We paddled north up the old Wolf River channel past the yacht club, I-40 bridge, AW Willis bridge, Coast Guard Station and the marina at Harbor Town.   We mostly kept to the west bank to stay in the shade of the bluff and enjoy a light breeze from the north.

There were a couple of power boats out, but they kept away from us and were not a problem.

It was getting close to sundown by the time we paddled back to the yacht club so we did not paddle south to the eddy at the end of Mud Island.  Also, Clark advised that if we lingered at the south tip of Mud Island until  sundown at 7:49 pm, we would likely be paddling back to the ramp and loading boats in the dark. We did not have lights on our boats and the park closes at 8:00 pm.

We left the park shortly after it closed at 8:00 pm.  One of the power boaters said that they wanted to leave by 8:00 pm before the guard left and the gate was closed.  As it turns out, there wasn't any guard at the gate when  we left.  Although both the entrance and exit gates were closed when we left, the exit gate opened automatically when we approached it in our car.

The Dales and Vernon's stopped by Westy's North End Grill after the paddle for refreshments.

Coincidentally, the Memphis River Parks Partnership and the Fourth Bluff are co-hosting a kayak paddle this evening.  The link is here.

I plan to join Clark Eid this Thursday 8/15/2019 at 6:00 pm for a sundown paddle on the inner harbor.

If you would like to join us
  • Launch on the Memphis Yacht Club ramp just south of the marina office on Mud Island.  If you are stopped at the gate entering the area, tell the guard you are going to the Yacht Club.
  • Paddle the flat water area in the inner harbor.  It's no problem avoiding power boats and we can wave at the tourists.
  • Hang out in the eddy at the southern tip of Mud Island and watch the sunset at 7:49 pm.
  • Return to the Yacht Club ramp and load up in the fading daylight.  The 1/2 hour of civilian twilight should be plenty of time.
  • Seek food and drink as needed.
