Memphis Harbor Sundowner (CANCELLED) -- CANCELED
About this event
This event is CANCELLED
Registrants will be emailed if plans change.
The Paddle
We expect to be on the water about two hours.
Sundown on June 17th is 8:16 PM. Twilight should last for about 1/2 hour after sunset to give us time to return to the launch area and load up. Because the New Moon rises and sets at about the same time as the sun, we won't have much light after that.
If you paddle inside Mud Island in the harbor, the island provides shade from the heat of the sun. It's very pleasant, even on a hot day.
- Meetup at 6:30 PM.
- Launch by 6:45 PM.
- Head north at a leisurely pace on the inside of Mud Island for about 45 minutes.
- Turn around and head south for about 45 minutes to the tip of Mud Island to see the sunset.
- Return to the launch area, load up and leave before dark.
Directions
We'll meet at the Lower Mud Island Boat Ramp
There's also a link to a Google Map below. Enter Mud Island via the A.W. Willis Ave Bridge, the western extension of North Parkway. Turn left (south) at the roundabout and enter the park at the south end of the island. Keep to the left. The Lower Mud Island Boat Ramp is past the Memphis Yacht Club/Marina and between the monorail and the Aphitheater.
Other Details
Safety in the Harbor: We'll paddle together in a group off to the side of the harbor out of the way of other boat traffic.
We will follow the American Canoe Association (ACA) Best Practices for Paddlers found here. Every paddler must a wear a PDF on the water.
Meetups posted on this website follow the Common Adventure Model for Recreational
You should be able to load, unload, transport, get into and get out of your own boat without assistance unless you have arranged a paddle partner. That said, we are a helpful group.
Clothing: We plan to be off the water before dark. However, white or light clothing is a smart precaution during twilight.
Lights: Technically, you must have lights on your boat after sunset. At a minimum you must have a flashlight handy to signal approaching boats.
Here's a link to an explanation of the Coast Guard Requirements.
Cheap lights are available at Amazon.
Bugs: Bugs probably won't be a problem, but bring bug spray just in case.
Membership: This paddle is for Bluff City Canoe Club members and their guests. If you are not a member, we'd love to have you join. Membership is only $30 per year and includes your entire family.
